The Annual SGA Desert Safari

By: Mirna Alsharif

AUDians went for a bumpy ride last Saturday at the Student Government Association’s annual Desert Safari.

Over 300 students and faculty members purchased tickets to attend the most-awaited event of the year. Everyone was asked to arrive at the university by 1:30 pm, where over 60 SUVs collected participants for the 30-minute ride into the desert.

Once in the desert, the expert drivers weaved through sand dunes, giving students the illusion that the SUV would flip over. Screams of excitement could be heard from students across the desert.

As soon as safari participants reached the camp, they were offered rides on camels. Snacks, such as grilled corn, chicken wings, falafels, and spring rolls were available for all the famished attendees. Tents filled with hookah sets quickly filled up with guests who preferred to smoke.

Also available was a souvenir souk where students and faculty were able to buy an amalgam of Khaleeji mementos. People flocked in to buy tokens of this highly celebrated day.

The Safari show started with a drumming session. A professional drummer took to the stage as attendees gathered around with drums in hand. The professional led a camp-wide jam session that everyone enjoyed.

After the buffet of grilled meats was served, a whirling dervish dancer performed his routine with multiple colorful skirts. A belly dancer soon followed, carrying out many cultures of dance: Egyptian dance, Levant dance, and Kuwaiti dance. She proved popular with the male guests of the safari.

When the belly dancer finished her skillful performance, attendees were led out of the camp to the SUVs to be returned to university. The fearless drivers drove out of the desert “night safari” style.

The Desert Safari proved to be an exciting success that will most likely keep AUDians coming back for more.
