Jeremy Scott obviously thinks that life in plastic is indeed
fantastic.
Moschino’s creative director once again stole the
spotlight last September at Milan Fashion Week after launching his
SS15 Barbie-inspired collection. However, it wasn’t because his
designs were uniquely iconic, but rather outrageous,
superficial and trashy.
The collection included T-shirts, sweaters, handbags,
headbands and even iPhone covers! Scott never fails to take fashion
critics and fashion lovers by surprise. During his first
season at Moschino, he integrated cartoons and fast food
with fashion in his outrageous McDonald’s and
SpongeBob themed collection, which was launched in February 2014.
So, something like the Barbie collection was very much anticipated from
Scott. The collection was later made available in stores
across the UAE including Bloomingdales, Harvey Nichols and Moschino.
Given the fact that the majority of girls in AUD- and the UAE in
general- are the perfect target customers for expensive, name brand handbags, it
is of no surprise that the item that particularly gained
attention from this collection is the famous neon pink
handbag.
The design of this popular purse is bulky and crowded; the zippers
are popping out from every side, making the handbag look even more vulgar. The
Chanel-looking chain doesn’t go with the style of the bag. Who would want to
carry a bag that looks like a jacket anyways? I would not be caught dead with
this bag.
But many have disagreed with me. Hayla Ghazal,
a 19-year-old Business Marketing student at AUD, purchased this
bag and said, “I bought it because I love bags that are out of
the ordinary. Its design is very unique and it’s my favorite shade of
pink. On top of that, I absolutely loved Barbie as a child.” Another
19-year-old business student, Oubie Zinou, also had a similar opinion
to Hayla’s. “I think the bag collection is nice and the details are
amazing!” he said.
Others found the popular bag unusual and ugly. Seventeen-year-old
student at Deira International School, Abdallah Jafar, described it
as “very peculiar” and said, “It would only suit a very niche market.” Twenty-one-year-old
media student at AUD, Alia Hammuri, is also not a very big fan of the
collection as a whole. “It’s the typical fault in our fashion society which
says that something is desirable because it’s a brand. It looks cheap and just
because people are wearing it doesn’t mean I would.”
Thanks to Jeremy Scott and this handbag, it looks like Ken will not
be having a hard time finding Barbie – the handbag is just too ugly to go
unnoticed in my opinion.
